Marine hose maintenance

Fendercare Marine provides full marine hose maintenance support in line with OCIMF guidelines to ensure reliability and safe operations.

In order to prevent hose damage and risk to your offshore operations, it is recommended that maintenance is carried out in line with the manufacturer’s and OCIMF’s guidelines and in line with any legislation that may be applicable. Regular maintenance and testing ensure the reliability of you marine hoses, and can also help to safely extend the life of your assets.

Floating hose servicing and maintenance

Floating and/or submarine hoses used offshore are exposed to a number of risks including;

  • External tears caused by propellers
  • Tears resulting from passing under the hull of tankers at berth
  • Tears or chaffing due to contact with the rudder/hull of FPSO
  • Chaffing under the hulls of tankers or tugboats
  • Accidental contacts with sharp metallic structures
  • Marlin attacks
  • Incorrect storage and maintenance

Repeated damage as a result of the above risks could, with time, lead to hose failure or a rejection of the concerned hoses, causing increased operating costs and potential terminal downtime.

Regular maintenance ensures reliability

For hose repairs, the external hose body can be repaired when only superficially damaged, for example when steel carcasses are not damaged. In case of any doubt regarding the possibility of hose repairing, we will provide all recommendations and expertise to facilitate the repairs where required.

So as to ensure all repairs last, they have to be carried out in an area free from moisture and dust. Areas with grease traces and dirt must be cleaned up and then dried out (trichloroethylene) before being repaired.

Although the life expectancy of a hose is closely linked to its location, use and the particular conditions of each site (weather, currents, handling, storage, etc.), it also depends on the correct maintenance.

Repairing hoses offshore

Repairing hoses offshore, when it is possible, is sometimes a long and delicate operation and may lead to long interruptions in terminal operations so repairing damage as soon as it appears and planning the superficial damage to be repaired onshore may prevent it from becoming worse or even irreversible and catastrophic.

Regular maintenance is recommended to support ongoing functionality of the marine hoses:

  • To keep the hose string always operational for each oil offloading
  • To determine the service life of each hose type
  • To optimise the number and type of interventions offshore (hose disconnection, towing of the hoses string, divers operation) and onshore (testing and repair of hoses)
  • To anticipate the hose replacement well in advance
  • To manage efficiently the stock of spare parts onshore
  • Have the ability to react to any hose failure in an efficient and safe manner whilst minimising the potential consequences of environmental damage and production.
  • The recommendation can be advantageously adapted in function of specific events and some hoses might sometimes be used in service for longer periods. However, managing each hose service life individually makes the management of interventions offshore more complex which usually increases costs.

Interrupting oil offloading due to a hose failure is economically and ecologically damaging. The proposal is, according to our experience, best compromise between the longer hoses service life and the minimum number of maintenance interventions.
